GER-5100 Adult Development and AgingThis course offers an in-depth exploration of the developmental processes acting within individuals from adulthood through old age. A biopsychosocial perspective provides the framework for understanding the various influences on adult development. Major developmental theories are examined to differentiate between normative and non-normative aging processes. Students evaluate both contemporary research and theoretical concepts as they study aging from demographic, historical, biological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives. Throughout the course, students examine and integrate the dynamic internal and external variables associated with successful aging to optimize developmental outcomes for the aging population. GER-6100 Geropsychological AssessmentThis course prepares the student to engage in a variety of data collection methods (e.g., interviewing, observation, self-report, psychological testing, integration of interdisciplinary assessments) in order to assess mood, cognition, decision making, functional capacities, and level of risk, with consideration of the interaction between these factors and biosocial factors for older adults. GER-6200 Geropsychological InterventionsThis course prepares students to develop effective psychological interventions as well as health promotion and prevention programs for older adults. Discussed are a variety of therapeutic modalities (individual, family, and group psychotherapy) and evidence-based theoretical models (cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, environmental, systemic). Course work will emphasize the importance of providing care in diverse settings and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. GER-7100 Geropsychological ConsultationThis course prepares the student to consult with families, professionals, service agencies, communities, and legal systems in the area of geropsychology. The student will learn how to work within an interdisciplinary care team and will become conversant with relevant ethical and legal standards and social policies. Consideration is given to issues of cross-cultural understanding and communication in consulting and collaborating with diverse groups of professionals and clients.
