This course is an introductory course in the sociology of marriage and the family. It explores the various sociological approaches to studying the family, the varieties of family forms, and problems facing American families. The course will begin by defining marriage and family and recognizing the commonality and diversity of experiences among families. The course also examines the ways in which families vary by social class, race, gender, and sexuality and how the material conditions of people's lives shape their attitudes and behaviors.
