Course Description
Performance appraisal is mandated by the Civil Service Reform Act. This course deals with its basic elements, including goal setting, individual and organizational performance measurement, coaching and counseling, and productivity improvement among both unionized and non- unionized employees.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Explain how performance appraisal is of strategic important to an organization.
  • Outline the role of performance appraisal in productivity improvement.
  • Discuss the elements in an effective performance appraisal process.
  • Explain how ongoing coaching and counseling contribute to a performance-driven organizational culture.
  • Describe examples of differences between the performance appraisal process for unionized employees and the process for non-unionized employees.
  • Explain the features of different performance appraisal formats.
  • Detail current issues and challenges related to performance management.
  • Present specific steps companies are taking to improve organizational performance.

Course Description
Further beginning study of the rehearsal and performance of all aspects of production and performance of musical or operatta literature comparable to two semesters of disciplined study at collegiate level. Demonstration through the submission of recorded public or private performance, submitted in YouTube format.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Articulate an understanding of the major responsibilities and roles of the director in a musical or operetta performance.
  • Discuss the major responsibilities and roles of the musical director or choreographer in a musical or operetta performance.
  • Identify the major responsibilities and roles of the set and costume designers in a musical or operetta performance.
  • Discuss the concept of copyright in a musical or operetta performance.
  • Explain the rehearsal process and casting for a production in a musical or operetta performance.
  • Demonstrate and provide evidence of producing at least two musical or operetta works
  • Articulate what was learned from the first production that was successfully implemented in a subsequent production.

Intermediate study of the rehearsal and performance of all aspects of production and performance of musical or operatta literature comparable to three semesters of disciplined study at collegiate level. Demonstration through the submission of recorded public or private performance, submitted in YouTube format.

Course Description
Basic skills of brass instrument playing, music reading, and skills such as scales and arpeggios.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Video of a performance of at least five different pieces, illustration of playing skills equivalent to one year of study on a brass instrument, showing appropriate performing technique and musical sensitivity to articulations, dynamics, phrasing and rhythm, as well as performance practice appropriate for each piece in terms of style, tempo and historical period.
  • Narrative discussing in depth the specific composers of the pieces on the video, as well as the importance of these pieces to the brass instrument literature.
  • Narrative describing unique capabilities or performance difficulties encountered in the performance of each piece on the video.

Course Description
First semester of piano study: includes repertoire from different styles, development of piano technique, and knowledge of performance practice applicable to the performed piano literature.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Identify three pieces representing three different styles, one from memory (Ex: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary)
  • Demonstrate through video performance appropriate instrumental performing technique to show musical sensitivity to articulation, dynamics, phrasing and rhythm in the score.
  • Demonstrate through video performance appropriate performance practice for the repertoire selected, including attention to historical conventions.
  • Outline student's background and experiences in piano study.
  • Discuss in-depth the specific repertoire performed on video submitted, including composer background, and significance of selections to the literature for piano.
  • Articulate the performance considerations and difficulties for the selected repertoire, both technical and musical.

Course Description
Further beginning level study of guitar technique, sight reading, and literature. Practice in melody, accompaniment, solos and group performance. This includes beginning study of performance and history of the guitar comparable to two semesters of disciplined study at collegiate level.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Demonstrate and discuss basic open chords on the guitar
  • Demonstrate and discuss an approach to articulations, dynamics, phrasing, and rhythm as it pertains and is related to guitar playing.
  • Demonstrate and discuss the varying roles of the guitar in ensemble settings.
  • Define and give examples of the guitar's role as a both a solo and accompanying instrument.
  • Demonstrate and discuss examples of scales and complex chords as they are played on the guitar.
  • Demonstrate and discuss how music theory is learned on and applied to the guitar.
  • Submit performance recordings of at least four pieces of varying styles and tempos. The performances can be from public or private recording sessions.
