Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:
  • Student can demonstrate (through programs and audio/video recordings) participation in a choral ensemble that has performed easy choral literature for a public audience
  • Through a narrative, student can demonstrate the following:
    • An understanding of the musical role each section of a chorus can assume in the various pieces performed
    • An understanding of the responsibilities of the individual performer in the chorus
    • A familiarity with the role of the chorus (in its various guises) through the history of music

    • A familiarity with the role of the chorus (in its various guises) through the history of music

    • An understanding of the responsibilities of the individual performer in the chorus
    • A familiarity with the role of the chorus (in its various guises) through the history of music

  • Student can demonstrate participation in a select role within the choir, such as a soloist or participant in a select ensemble within the choir, or in a position

Course Description
Participation in a performing group that presents choral music of a religious or sacred nature in a variety of styles and from advanced literature. Opportunity for solos, small ensembles and other featured roles in the ensemble, as well as important leadership and/or administrative positions.

Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Student can demonstrate (through programs and audio/video recordings) participation in a choral ensemble that has performed moderately advanced choral literature for a public audience
  • Through a narrative, student can demonstrate the following:
    • An understanding of the musical role each section of a chorus can assume in the various pieces performed
    • An understanding of the responsibilities of the individual performer in the chorus
    • A familiarity with the role of the chorus (in its various guises) through the history of music
    • A familiarity with the lives of the composers and the history of the pieces performed on the recording
  • In the narrative, student will describe her/his advanced position in the ensemble and its duties

 
Piano Ensemble II   (MUS-362)   3 credits

Course Description
Reading and performing four-hand compositions for one or two pianos.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Demonstrate participation in a piano ensemble/s through repertoire list practiced and/or performed, knowledge of genre and history of pieces performed. Student will submit the 3 repertoire pieces to the mentor for approval before writing PLA narrative.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and play piano ensemble with musical sensitivity to the articulations, dynamics, phrasing, and rhythm of the music. This will be done by submission of videotape, and a discussion of the ensemble problems/ challenges for each piece performed.
  • Submit a recording of his/her performance with partner of at least three pieces of varying styles and tempos. The recording will be a private YouTube video of approximately 20 - 30 minutes in length.

First semester of piano study: includes repertoire from different styles, development of piano technique, and knowledge of performance practice applicable to the performed piano literature.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Identify three pieces representing three different styles, one from memory (Ex: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary)
  • Demonstrate through video performance appropriate instrumental performing technique to show musical sensitivity to articulation, dynamics, phrasing and rhythm in the score.
  • Demonstrate through video performance appropriate performance practice for the repertoire selected, including attention to historical conventions.
  • Outline student's background and experiences in piano study.
  • Discuss in-depth the specific repertoire performed on video submitted, including composer background, and significance of selections to the literature for piano.
  • Articulate the performance considerations and difficulties for the selected repertoire, both technical and musical.
  • Describe the key and form of the selected repertoire.
