LIT-2050 American Literature I


The period from the mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries was perhaps the greatest growth spurt in the history of American literature, with a proliferation of works turning the nation into a literary force. This course includes a diverse group of writers from various intellectual and ethnic backgrounds that have helped to shape the unique American themes, ideas, and expressions in our ever-evolving literary identity. The curated texts will allow students to critically examine cultural, political, social, and historical contexts as well as the literary characteristics and elements to further their understanding of the role of literature in society and culture.
